Risk Watch, an unintentional injury prevention program, has been taught in Brookwood schools for the past several years. The program spans from Pre-K through 8th Grade and covers eight areas of unintentional injury. Brookwood Schools have been locally and nationally recognized for the implementation and success of this program. The Glenwood Risk Watch Coalition and BSD 167 were proud to conduct a new teacher training on September 27, 2007 at the Stephen A. Racz Administration and Diagnostic Center. New district staff members were invited to come and learn about this life saving program.
Teachers throughout the district will be giving students the knowledge necessary for being safe at school and at home. The program begins with a pretest in each grade level. Mrs. Hein, RW Director, is working to incorporate the use of the SMART board and Senteo Response System to collect pretest data. Risk experts will be invited to visit schools to supplement the program and share safety messages. Tom Rinnus, a representative of the Secretary of State's Office came to Hickory Bend and Longwood to present bicycle safety on October 1 and 2. Throughout the year, many other risk experts including firefighters, pharmacists, and police officers show the importance of the Risk Watch program with presentations to students.
Please get involved by discussing these topics on the designated "Risk Watch Days" (listed below) as well as at those teachable moments throughout the year. Truly, anytime is a good time for Risk Watch! Students are faced with risk everyday; we can prevent tragedies by empowering our students with knowledge! Visit the Risk Watch web site to find information on each safety area covered by this comprehensive program. You can also see Mrs. Hein, NFPA's 2004 Teacher of the Year and TWO nationally recognized saves by Brookwood students Gerry Melendez and Jabari Henderson! If you can help make the Risk Watch program even better, please e-mail Amy Hein with your suggestions!
