Students "lead by example" and created wonderful artwork for the 2007 Metra Safety Poster Contest.

by Nancy Wartman

October 23, 2007

Congratulations go out to Brookwood students Lorena F., Imani D., and James L. for winning the 2007 Metra Safety Poster Contest.  This contest included several schools in the Chicago area.  The theme for the contest was "Lead by Example".  Each fourth grade student from Hickory Bend submitted a drawing illustrating how children should follow safety rules and teach others about safety by railroad tracks.  The entries were judged on creativity, originality, and how participants expressed the theme.  The students' entries were mailed in the spring of 2007 and the winners were notified in July 2007.

This poster won a $250 gift card. Great Job!

Lorena F. won first place and received a Hewlett Packard Notebook computer.  Her winning illustration will also be shown on posters around Chicago and surrounding suburbs.  In addition, a 2008 Metra Safety calendar will be coming out soon including Lorena's drawing.  Imani D. came in second place and received a $250 gift card.  A $100 gift card was awarded to James L. for coming in third place.  All three students were excited about winning and are currently fifth grade students at Brookwood Middle School.  Congratulations goes to the winners for the hard work they put in to winning these awards from the entire Brookwood District 167 staff.  Thank you to Mrs. Nancy Wartman, art teacher, for entering the artwork and her consistent dedication to all her students.
