November 13, 2008

We have been busy.

We are learning many new things in fifth
grade. The students are presenting their Wax Museum projects which include: Mount Rushmore, Matthew Brady, and Walt Whitman. The Wax Museum will take place on November 18th.
The students will continue to check out library books from the media center. Please note that it is important that your child read every day for at least 15-20 minutes and fill in their reading log. Ask them about what they have read. Questioning your child helps with comprehension and language skills. Also, have your child read aloud to you. This will help develop fluency.

Language Arts
We are currently reading the story Folktales From Asia. Next week we will read the small books that are related to the story. We are continuing to work on comprehension skills as well as grammar. The spelling test and reading test will be on Friday. Please read with your child and quiz your child daily on the spelling list.

Science
Mr. Erwin’s science class finished their recycling projects. They were fantastic! Great job everyone!

Social Studies
Mr. Dryjanski’s social studies class is studying the United States Constitution. Students will be quizzed weekly on geography.

Character Education
Developing social skills and enhancing one’s character is part of daily class interaction. Things discussed this week include: Being Accountable

Study Tips
Encourage your child to read all types of reading materials including magazines, the newspaper, articles on-line, etc.

Estimation: Have your child estimate the amount spent on a shopping trip. Give your child dice, and have them roll. Your child can round up or down accordingly. For instance, if he or she rolls a 4 and a 5, it can be combined to make 45, which rounds up to 50, or 54, which rounds down to 50. You can add more dice for larger numbers. The rule is: 5 or more, raise the score; less than 5, drop to the floor.

Upcoming Events
Homework Club-every Thursday 3:15-4:15-students must have a permission slip
Intramurals-Tuesdays

Math
We are working on problem solving using multiplication with whole numbers and decimals. There will be a quiz Friday, November 14th. Problem solving is part of our everyday routine so we are applying the skills we have learned. Remember that students should review basic math facts (multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction) on a daily basis.
