Dear Parents and Community Members,

I have had many conversations with parents and community members over the course of this school year regarding Brookwood Middle School. Many of you are aware that it is an aging facility. Our architect at the request of the Board of Education conducted a facility assessment of Brookwood Middle School in February 2008. The original intent of the assessment was to assess the cost of meeting the needs of fifth and sixth grade students while preserving the building for the Glenwood Community. The cost to upgrade the heating and air conditioning, electrical service, lighting, fire protection; add restrooms, a new Learning Center, new computer lab, and cafeteria would cost approximately nine million dollars compared to the cost of a new building at a cost of approximately ten million dollars. As a result of this report, the Board of Education has decided to seek a building referendum from the community in the spring of 2010 with the intent of building a new school which would open in the fall of 2011.

In these troubled economic times, the first question will be, "How much is this going to cost?" Before I can answer that question, we have to decide together what we want to accomplish with a new building for the community of Glenwood. I will be holding three Community Forums to provide an opportunity for parents, students, and community members to share ideas and input regarding the design and features of a new middle school for fifth and sixth graders in our school district. Everyone is encouraged to attend at least one of these sessions. All three meetings will take place at the Administrative Center at 201 Glenwood-Dyer Road. The dates and times are listed below.

When:     June 1st - 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

              June 2nd - 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

              June 8th - 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

I know that this is a busy time of year. We are holding these meetings now in case federal stimulus funds suddenly become available to offset the cost of this building project. I hope that you will be able to take time out of your schedule to attend one of these meetings.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Pamela K. Hollich

Superintendent
