Congratulations to Longwood, Hickory Bend, and Brookwood Junior High School students and staff! Each year under the No Child Left Behind Act, schools must meet certain benchmarks in mathematics and reading on state achievement tests to make adequate yearly progress. Schools that do not meet the benchmark score for two consecutive years are placed on an academic watch list. In order to be removed from the list, a school must meet standards for two consecutive years. Brookwood Junior High School was previously on the academic watch list for not meeting the benchmark score for mathematics achievement. For the past two school years, Brookwood Junior High School has met the benchmark standard and is therefore no longer on the academic watch list. At this point in time, none of the district's schools are on the list.
Longwood and Hickory Bend recently received a Spotlight Schools Award for their academic achievement on the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) for 2007. To earn a Spotlight Schools Award, a school must:
• have had an enrollment of at least 50% low income students in 2006;
• have had at least 60% of students meeting or exceeding standards in both reading and mathematics in 2006 on the ISAT;
• have had at least 50% of students meeting or exceeding standards in both reading and mathematics in 2004 and 2005 on the ISAT; and
• have made Adequate Yearly Progress in 2005 and 2006 in mathematics and reading as established by the No Child Left Behind Act.
The district is proud of their efforts and will continue to strive for increased academic achievement at all levels.
