Adolescence is a time when our students will experience many
physical changes. The Human Growth and Development Committee has
developed a program for grades 5-8 in conjunction with the Robert
Crown Health Center. The primary goal of this program is to teach
our students about the changes they will experience as they enter
the teen years. According to Illinois School Code, 105ILCS11/03
Comprehensive Health Education Programs, we are responsible for the
following major educational areas as a basis for the curriculum. By
participating in this program students will:
➢ Understand physical and emotional changes related to
adolescence.
➢ Understand change is normal.
➢ Know that all people mature at their own rate.
➢ Realize the importance of good hygiene.
➢ Know how HIV is transmitted and the difference between HIV and
AIDS.
➢ Know that abstinence until marriage is a prevention for
pregnancy
On October 14, 15, 26, and 27th, our students will participate in a
program presented by Robert Crown Health Center. Personnel from
Robert Crown will come directly to the school to present their
program. This program includes presentations on the following:
➢ 5th Grade: Life Begins
➢ 6th Grade: Human Growth and Development
➢ 7th Grade: Emotional and Social Growth
➢ 8th Grade: Adolescence
In addition, students will receive information about Aids. A video
will be shown and our school nurse will conduct small group
discussions.
Brookwood Middle School and Brookwood Junior High together will host a parent information meeting on October 8, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. in the Learning Center of Brookwood Jr. High School.
The purpose of the meeting is to present an overview of the
unit to parents and provide an opportunity for parents to ask
questions. If you have any questions or concerns about this
program, please try to attend our information session.
