Dear Brookwood School District 167:
As you are aware, the Solar Eclipse is slated to take place in the Illinois area on Monday, August 21st, 2017, between 11:54 a.m. with the maximum magnitude taking place at 1:19 p.m. and ending at 2:42 p.m. which is in line with our school dismissal time which takes place at 3:15 p.m. slightly after the Solar Eclipse ends at 2:42 p.m.
Therefore, as a result, recess is canceled on August 21st, 2017, as well as all extracurricular activities and meetings. Instead, allow students to watch television or use virtual viewing to learn more about the solar eclipse event.
While we are encouraging our schools to use this once-in-a-lifetime event as a teachable moment, as the moon passes between the sun and the earth, casting a shadow that will cause day to suddenly become night for those in the path of totality.
WE MUST REMAIN INSIDE OF OUR BUILDINGS!
We are encouraging you to use this memorable teaching moment through broadcasting the Solar Eclipse rotation throughout the school via television, and remind students to follow the below safety precautions:
- DO NOT LOOK UP AT THE SUN on Monday, August 21st, 2017 especially around the aforementioned times of the solar eclipse;
- Close all shades for safety purposes;
- Due to the fact students do not have the required safety glasses, stay away from the windows and remind them: DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN especially during the eclipse, which CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE EYE TISSUE;
- ALL CLASSROOMS MUST HAVE ADULT SUPERVISION TO ENSURE STUDENT SAFETY;
- Please use the attached link to make the 2017 Solar Eclipse a memorable inside learning experience for our students. [Click Here: NASA Eclipse Live Info]
Parents, who do not send their kids to school on this day and provide the reason due to the solar eclipse will be excused. However, our schools will remain open.
I appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
Steadfast,
Dr. Valorie M. Moore
